It can feel fulfilling to know you are helping someone you care about, but it is also hard work and it can come at a price to your own health. You can feel so stressed and overwhelmed at times that you might neglect yourself. In fact, some doctors think of caregivers as the "hidden patients." Itis extremely important to take care of yourself while you are caring for others. Remember, you can't help anyone else if you get sick, so make your own health a priority. Here are some tips that will help. Eat a healthy, balanced diet to provide your body with the nutrition and energy it needs. Be physically active. Getting 30 to 60 minutes of exercise three to five times a week can boost your energy level, reduce stress, and improve your mood. Get enough sleep every night to help your body recover physically and mentally from the day's events. Dont turn to alcohol or tobacco in an attempt to help you cope. While they may provide a little short-term relief, regular use can affect your sleep and cause serious health problems for you. + Manage your stress in healthy ways. You may want to try relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, listening to soothing music, or engaging in a hobby you enjoy. Visit your doctor for regular check-ups. Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Develop a list of contacts you can call on when you need assistance. Many communities also have respite care options for temporary help in the home or even a short stay at a care home to give the caregiver a break. To learn more about how our Caregiver Support Program can help you or to access the resources referred to in this article, visit www.londondrugs.com/ caregivers or speak to your London Drugs pharmacist. We are always here to help. Are you feeling overwhelmed with the responsibility of giving someone medications? London Drugs pharmacists can help by reviewing each medication with you and by putting prescribed medications in blister packaging— organized by time of day and dose. This makes it easy to know how much and when to give each medication. Grace Kwan, Pharmacist, Long Term Care
