MORE THAN AN INTERNSHIP: EXCELLENCE IN AG PROGRAM The Excellence in Ag (EIA) program stands out as an exceptional scholarship and internship initiative aimed at supporting students in funding their education, offering valuable hands-on field experiences and nurturing their professional growth within the agribusiness sector. For Percy McDonald from Warman, Sask, the EIA program became the necessary boost to support his agricultural aspirations as he is completing his studies at the University of Saskatchewan. McDonald's agricultural journey began early, in the picturesque surroundings of his grandparents’ farm in Carrot River, Sask McDonald's first year inthe EIA program was 2022, and he spent his time at Saskatoon Co-op. In 2023, he continued his journey at South Country Co-op pating his third year in the EIA program, a transformative in Barons, Alta. In 2024, he's eagerly ai experience that has already left a lasting impact on his life. According to McDonald, the scholarship provided essential financial support for his education. But his dedication to the program is about more than just money. “What really gave me peace of mind was the guarantee of a job every summer. Knowing that I already have a secured position and will receive the additional knowledge and expert mentorship has allowed me to feel less stressed and focused on studying,” McDonald said. When asked to pinpoint the best thing about the EIA program, McDonald's answer is resounding: the people. The individuals he meets and collaborates with, the farmers he learns from, and the companionship within the EIA group make this experience truly exceptional. “Having a support group within EIA goes a Long way. We keep in touchall summer, q ing each other or sharing quirky findings or interesting Learnings. l've met some of my best friends through this program," he added For McDonald, recommending EIA to other agriculture students is a no-brainer, The past two years have equipped him immensely, but he knows there's always more to learn, experience and share within the program: “Percy was a valuable member of the team. He provided field scouting support and assistance in managing our 4R Phosphate Trial when we were short-handed," reflected Jack Payne, Agronomy Solutions Manager at South Country Co-op. "He also challenged me as a mentor, asking questions that made me dig deeper into agronomic principles thatwe often take for granted. He was a great asset to our retail and a pleasure to work with."
