PROTECTING YOUR The term"mental health" refers to the state of our emotional and psychological well-being. Good mental health plays an important role in maintaining our general health, in enabling us to cope with the challenges life hands us, and in our ability to get enjoyment from life. There are a number of factors that can affect our mental health, including our family situations, financial states, relationships with other people, medical conditions we may have, and experiences such as the death of a loved one. Achieving and maintaining good mental health is possible, but it can take patience and support. Here are some tips that can help. Accept that life can be challenging Know your strengths and weaknesses, and accept yourself as you are. Set realistic goals for yourself. Create healthy, supportive relationships with people who are willing to accept you for who you are. Life stages Mental health issues can vary by age. IAdolescence can be a difficult period in life. The problem is considered so important that Canada has created the National Standard for Mental-Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students to develop a set of flexible, voluntary guidelines that will help post-secondary educational institutions support the mental health and well-being of their students. It is the first program of its kind in the world. HAdulthood can have its own stresses, including challenging environments at home or at work: difficult relationships with partners, children, and aging parents: financial problems; and major life changes. Stress is a normal response to outside pressures, and in small doses it can help us stay focused and meet challenging situations. However, when it is frequent or prolonged, it raises the risk of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and physical health problems. I Mid-life and beyond is sometimes complicated by the presence of chronic health conditions that can affect our mental health. The challenges of living with an ongoing health problem can tempt some people to try to escape daily life by using alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, or other drugs—all of which can have a negative impact on both physical and mental health. Additionally, there are problems such as memory loss and dementia that can take a toll on mental and emotional well-being. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of à mental health problem, it is very important to speak with à doctor or mental health professional as soon as possible to start the process of developing a treatment plan. = Looking for more mental health resources and advice for people of all = ages?
